Kerfies, Cleggies and all that.

A family history for family and friends.

Level Houses

These were basic thatched cottages in Hurst. For a long time, I didn't know where they were because they are not marked on old maps and they have long since changed their name. Then I came across the photo below in the book "A History Of the Manor and Lead Mines of Marrick, Swaledale" by L. O, Tyson, and immediately recognised the location.

A lot of our relations lived in these cottages during the 1800s. They are very conveniently placed for a short walk to work for lead miners. Queen's Level is just across the road and other shafts and workings are close by. The buildings still stand but they are no longer thatched and the windows have been enlarged. They are possibly holiday rentals now.
