Elizabeth Spencer was also known as Betty. Elizabeth was James Clegg's second wife. She was a widow herself and had inherited two sons from her first marriage with Jonathan Baume who had himself been married before.

Her family were stone merchants like James Clegg and quarried around Woodhouse Scar, that is the escarpment on and adjacent to Albert Promenade - also known as "The Rocks".
