    Marriage | Richard Halliday
30 May 1830, Saint John the BaptistO, Halifax, Yorkshire, England, United KingdomO
Richard was not of full age at the time of his marriage so must have either
    1) Fibbed a little bit as he was only about 6 weeks away, or
    2) Didn't know for sure how old he was. Being illegitimate, this may well be the case. On subsequent census returns he gives his birth place as both Skircoat and Ovenden so it looks like he wasn't sure about that either.

James Clegg

b. 2 May 1810, d. 17 March 1878
James Clegg
View this person in the tree.

Person Notes

James is the earliest in the Clegg line we know about. He was born in Sowerby but must have moved across the Calder Valley to Mount Tabor early in life, maybe when he married, or before that, for business or employment.

They are all filled in now, but at that time there were several stone quarries around Mount Tabor helping to build Yorkshire mills and other infrastructure in the industrial revolution. We don't know for certain what role he played in the quarry where he worked but he probably didn't wield a pick. One report I have says he was a quarry owner.

In 1841 James lived with his wife and son in the same household as his elderly father-in-law, James Rothera (Rothery) who was a worsted weaver aged 70. There were no other Cleggs in the village but there were other Rotheras including a couple who were the grocers.

The Rothera families lived variously in several houses in and around Mount Tabor including a house called ‘Sentry’ which is close to a large quarry. They also lived in ‘Sandy Fore’, a little way down the road, ‘Upper Shaw Booth’ and ‘Higham’. The 1841 census doesn’t give detailed addresses, so we’re not sure which house James and Sarah Clegg lived in with James Rothera and their young son George Clegg.

James was very involved with Methodism and was a trustee and a Sunday School Superintendent at the Wesleyan Chapel in Mount Tabor. It's likely that he donated a significant amount of the stone used to build the chapel.

Person Notes

James was, by accounts, a quarry owner in Mount Tabor. He was a religious man and established the Wesleyan church in the village. He was a spiritual leader of the group that formed and then built the chapel, but his day jobs were worsted spinner and grocer.
