They are all filled in now, but at that time there were several stone quarries around Mount Tabor helping to build Yorkshire mills and other infrastructure in the industrial revolution. We don't know for certain what role he played in the quarry where he worked but he probably didn't wield a pick. One report I have says he was a quarry owner. He donated much of the stone used to build the Weslyan Chapel at Mount Tabor so this corroborates that story. One possibility is that he secured a lease on some land in Mount Tabor and was able to set up his own quarry bussiness. Alternatively, the land may have become available to him through a fortuotous marriage. All speculation on my part.
You'll notice that James was baptised twice, once as an infant in the established church in Sowerby, and then as an adult at the Independent Chapel in Mixenden. Perhaps we can infer that he got involved with Methodism as a young man, even as a result of his marriage or linked with his move from Sowerby.
In 1841 James lived with his wife and son in the same household as his elderly father-in-law, James Rothera (Rothery) who was a worsted weaver aged 70. There were no other Cleggs in the village but there were other Rotheras including a couple who were the grocers.
The Rothera families lived variously in several houses in and around Mount Tabor including a house called ‘Sentry’ which is close to a large quarry. They also lived in ‘Sandy Fore’, a little way down the road, ‘Upper Shaw Booth’ and ‘Higham’. The 1841 census doesn’t give detailed addresses, so we’re not sure which house James and Sarah Clegg lived in with James Rothera and their young son George Clegg.
As we've established, James was very involved with Methodism and was a trustee and a Sunday School Superintendent at the Chapel in Mount Tabor.
In 1862 his wife Sarah died and James remarried. His second wife Elizabeth Spencer was a widow herself and daughter of a stone delver and merchant from Scar Bottom in Halifax. Elizabeth though, had a grocers business in King Cross. James and Elizabeth lived at Prospect Place, Mount Tabor, just next to the chapel.
