Person Notes

Abraham was born in Lumbutts above Todmorden but had had connections to the area around Mytholmroyd and Crag Vale through his mother's family. He was apprenticed as a weaver to his uncle, James Barnes in Mytholmroyd in 1824.

By the time he married Grace Spencer, he was a worsted overlooker in Luddenden, probably working for John Murgatroyd, a contemporary of his. Abraham and Grace's first daughter Sarah (b. 1839) always gave her birth place as Midgely, not Luddenden so it's likely the family lived up the hill near Oats Royd even then. Certainly by 1851 their address was Oats Royd.

Murgatroyd built his first steam powered mill at Oats Royd around 1842 so Abraham would, most likely, have a part in overseeing that construction as much as the continuing production of worsted yarns at the water powered mills in the valley bottom.

By 1861 Abraham Hollingrake was living at Lumb Mill House and was calling himself a worsted spinner, not just an overlooker. The business he started with George Clegg continued at Lumb Mill well into the 1870s even when they had started production at Sun Works in Halifax.

By 1881 Abraham, now a widower, was living with his daughter and her husband in the fashionable area of Halifax (as it was then), at Park Terrace. He died in 1884 and is buried at Mount Tabor.
