Person Notes

Norman Kerfoot Roberts was also known as Norman Kerfoot-Roberts. Accounts of Norman suggest he was a relaxed and happy-go-lucky individual, quite different to the ambitious nature of some of his immediate family. He was happy to chat with people or just play golf.

He had a flair for drawing and painting and also liked to collect things, buying, selling and swapping the various trinkets he aquired on his travels. During his time in the army he spent a lot of time working in the stores. This probably played up well to his skills and interests. One story which was regularly told around the dinner table was that Norman (Pop) had meticulously collected a fine display of colourful and exotic butterflies mounted on a board whilst serving in India. When these disappeared one day, Norman challenged the Bearer as to what had happened to them. The Bearer imediately admitted to throwing them all away, the reason being: "They were all dead Sahib!"

In later years Norman became hard of hearing. The other standard dinnertime story about him was his reaction following a discussion about roses. A new variety had been developed in France just before WW2 and, anticipating the forthcoming invasion, the grower had smuggled out cuttings to other countries. In 1945, buds of this new rose were given to the delegations of the newly formed United Nations and it was this rose that the family were discussing. One said that the flowers and stems were very big and indicated this with thumb and forefinger. With very uncharacteristic irritation, Norman retorted, "Don't be so bloody stupid! Who heard of Sweet Peas with stems that thick."
The rose is called "Peace".
