The origins of this family name are thought to be from the Welsh or ancient Britton name, Rhydderch or Roderick.
Our Rothera family group centered on Mount Tabor, but there was a distribution of Rotheras around Halifax. As time went by during the 19th century, the name seems to have settled on the more common spelling of Rothery. Our rural family group of Rotheras generally moved towards the Halifax town centre during this period like our related family groups of Clegg and Hollingrake.
The family owned, or certainly lived in, several farms around Mount Tabor: Sentry, Sandy Fore, Higham, and Upper Shaw Booth. They were mostly weavers.
James Rothera was a staunch Wesleyan and led a group of church people to break away from the Mixenden Independent Chapel at Moor End when there was a disagreement about a new minister. They established and built a new chapel at Mount Tabor.
There is a One-Name study of the Rothery/Rothera name.
