Hurst hamlet is 4 miles north-west from [Marrick], and has a small Wesleyan chapel. The lead mines here, the property of the trustees of the late Major-General F. Morley, are not now worked ; the shaft has a depth from the summit level of 60 fathoms and the yield was formerly from 66 to 72 per cent. : it is supposed that these mines are the oldest in the kingdom, and that this place was one of the penal settlements to which Roman convicts were sent to labour : a piece of lead bearing the name " Adrian, " discovered some time since in one of the workings, is now in the British Museum. Letters arrive at Reeth, thence per messenger on foot at 9.30 a.m. LETTER Box cleared on mon. wed. & fri. at I2 noon.
