The Chapel was built in 1820 and extended in 1824. James Rothera and James Clegg were influential in establishing the church after they and some of the other congregation split away from the Mixenden Independent Chapel at Moor End following a disagreement.

The Sunday School was built next door in 1836 and extended in 1871.

In 1845 the Chapel accommodated up to 600 worshippers. The porch was added in 1860 during a refurbishment which included a new harmonium by Alexandre of Paris.

The gallery fronts, pews, pulpit and organ loft were again refurbished around 1875. In 1891, the Chapel was lit by gas for the first time, the costs of the installation being defrayed by Mrs Ann Murgatroyd.
